SWVG has to operate differently now. Following Government advice, we have cancelled all public events, including training, general meetings and face-to-face support groups.

Here are some ideas on teaching English during COVID19, supplied by South East Strategic Partnership for Migration.

Several SWVG groups are meeting virtually, using Zoom, SkypeMeetNow, Google Hangouts, and probably other systems.  As you probably know, free Zoom meetings of more than two people are limited to 40 minutes unless you pay. SWVG hasn’t paid for a Zoom account because we get free use of Google Hangouts for anyone with a SWVG email address. If you want to “meet” using Google Hangouts, just email chris.holloway@swvg-refugees.org.uk and ask for a SWVG email address. If you need help to get going on WhatApp, Zoom or Hangouts, others in SWVG should be able to help you. If you need help, email chris.holloway@swvg-refugees.org.uk.

DBS checks: The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) announced temporary changes to identification checking guidelines which enable ID documents to be viewed digitally, rather than having to see physical documents. This will allow necessary DBS checks to still be carried out to ensure that volunteers working with children and vulnerable people are suitable and safe to do so (from DBS website 24 March 2020 – check for updates at https://www.gov.uk/government/news/covid-19-changes-to-dbs-id-checking-guidelines).
