What we do
We aim to reduce the isolation and marginalisation of asylum seekers and improve their wellbeing. Our Vistors maintain a one-to-one relationship with their Client, usually meeting weekly, providing practical advice and links to legal and health services, and connections with community and faith organisations. We have a presence every week at a Drop-in Centre alongside other refugee support organisations. Click here for details of our work in 2010 -2011 In cases of destitution or need, we may be able to help with subsistence and rent from our ASSIST Fund. This accounts for around 75% of our expenditure. Click here for details of ASSIST in 2010-2011 Our Legal Justice Project was set up in March 2009 with help from the Halley Stewart Foundation. It can provide access to specialist advice from a top immigration solicitor on individual cases or on legal issues affecting asylum seekers. The project also runs training workshops for SWVG volunteers on relevant current legal matters. Click here for details of the Legal Justice Project 2010 -2011. Read how the project was able to help Marie and David. We hold events to raise funds and awareness. For example talks, theatre evenings, concerts and sponsored walks. We campaign for a more just and humane asylum system. Click here to see our campaigns page.
SWVG Overview
SWVG is a group of approximately 60 volunteers. Many are trained visitors who befriend asylum seekers and refugees in the Southampton area.
- Over 80% of our income goes to our clients. We pay for 20 hours per week administrative assistance; all the rest of the work is done by volunteers.
- The ASSIST scheme provides some financial support to about 50 destitute asylum seekers each year. We may pay for a basic room and provide a small amount for subsistence each week.
- Our funds come from grants from charitable trusts, donations from individuals and organisations and income from events.
- SWVG provides speakers for local churches and other groups, raising awareness of the lives of Asylum Seekers in the UK.
- SWVG members join in campaigns on behalf of asylum seekers.
- SWVG is a registered charity.
